Part A. Develop a 1000 word information package that can either

1) Be offered to clients to help them understand how mindfulness-based approaches may be relevant and/or practically helpful for them.
or
2) Be offered to fellow practitioners/trainees to help them understand why mindfulness-based approaches may be of relevance to their practice.

Part B. Clearly identify a key concept, idea or issue that was used in Part A. In the introduction to Part B state the key concept, idea or issue from Part A that you

have chosen to focus on. Demonstrate, in 1000 words, your understanding of this concept through summarising the underpinning theory and over-viewing relevant clinical

/ research literature.

Guidance

1. Writing Style
Part A should be written or spoken in language appropriate to the user group (e.g. non-technical with jargon terms defined for a client leaflet).

Part B should take the form of a short academic essay. Note that you need to identify the concept you are discussing clearly: too broad a concept and you may struggle

to give an overview in 1000 words; too narrow and you may find little literature.

2. Referencing
Both should show references in the standard UoS format where possible but there are likely to be fewer references in Part A and used in an appropriate way especially

for clients. So you may just have a reference in brackets at the end of a paragraph in a client leaflet whereas in Part B you may be using them much more explicitly

(such as: Smith (2010) considers that…)

If the format for Part A makes standard referencing clumsy (e.g. in a video) you can discuss with Tim another referencing format – but only for Part A of this

assignment! Part B must be in standard UoS format.

3. Format
Part A can be presented as a simple handout or leaflet in black and white text and no or few graphics. You can aID colour and graphics to make the handout more

interesting and inviting and it is useful to practice doing so as producing client literature is something you may want to do when you are working as a counsellor. You

could also use other media formats (such as setting Part A up as a single webpage or set of linked webpages). Make sure you discuss with Tim if you want to use more

media rich formats.

The community school is uniquely equipped to develop an educated citizenry, strengthen family and community, and nurture democracy in the twenty-first century.

Guiding Principles for Community Schools

Foster strong partnerships: Partners share their resources and expertise and work together to design community schools and make them work.

  • Share accountability for results: Clear, mutually agreed-upon results drive the work of community schools. Data helps partners measure progress toward results.
  • Set high expectations for all: Community schools are organized to support learning. Children, youth, and adults are expected to learn at high standards and to be contributing members of their community.

Proposed Evaluative Work

ABC Elementary – a community school ? focuses on creating a child?centered community. One of the ways in which the school does this is by offering health services to their students and families. This is important because their once full?time school nurse ? now on a part?time schedule – is only able to serve the neediest students. Furthermore, families depended on the school nurse for their own health care because there were no health facilities in the neighborhood. Families with no personal transportation had to spend the entire day with all their children on public transportation traveling across the city for services. If not for the school nurse, many illnesses and injuries would have gone undiagnosed and under referred. Emergency rooms were the neighborhood’s primary care if the school nurse could not assist them. With reduced health services at the school, families were left without a place to receive medical care. Realizing this gap, the community school wishes to partner with their local university to provide a school health clinic and evaluate the effectiveness of this proposed program. They believe that having a full?time school nurse in their health clinic would address their students’ barriers to learning. The health clinic aims to provide free family health services ? as well as extended educational opportunities ? within walking distance of their homes. The health clinic staff will conduct school?wide home visits (twice a year) further building family relationships and celebrations for all children and their success. Referrals and clinic information will be disseminated by staff and followed through by the clinic social worker.

The Poet Laureate’s role is to promote poetry across the United States in any fashion the chosen poet finds helpful.

These poems have been collected in anthologies and also published on the official website. Further, a number of mini documentaries filming readers of poems explaining why a particular poem moved them are featured on the website and also DVDs. Your discussion allows you to explore some of these favorite poems before moving on to your own personal exploration of poetry.

Read your ONE (1) selected poem aloud.
Describe briefly in your post, in no fewer than 150 words, a reaction you experienced to the video that impacted you the most. Perhaps you might discuss why or how that particular video appealed or related to you or how your reading of the poem differed from the narrator in the video. Be as specific as you can.

Part 2 EXAMPLE: In Brooks’ “We Real Cool,” the poem’s depiction of inner city youth presents with irony kids trying to be cool even while predicting they will die a premature death. In Natatcha Estebanez’ video of 20 year old John Ulrich reacting to Brooks’ “We Real Cool,” Ulrich discusses this poem and his life in South Boston where he lost several of his neighbors and peers under the age of 25 to drug overdoses and suicide. Ulrich mentions how he formed “South Boston Survivors” to help fellow young people find art and redirect the despair he felt was “flooding the streets of South Boston.” He mentions how he was introduced to Brooks’ “We Real Cool” in high school when kids he knew were dying. Ulrich describes how the poem reflected on his own skipping school. Ulrich discusses how what seemed innocent at first, like skipping school and playing pool, ended in tragedy in real life, not just in the poem, with young people getting lost and some losing their lives. Now Brooks’ poem helps Ulrich help others.

This particular poem and video moved one Excelsior professor in particular [who came from an impoverished inner city youth,] and who to this day facilitates community poetry workshops for inner city youth and/or summer intervention camps for young people in the same spirit as Ulrich’s “South Boston Survivors.”
